🫣 Claude killed my parents...

Hey Reader,

So guess what — I inadvertently killed my parents. Well, Claude killed them — in last week's newsletter.

You see, I've been using AI to help clean up my grammar and improve flow. And I missed it. The moment it quietly killed off both my parents.

Here's what happened: I had written about losing my dad, my spouse losing his mom, and my spouse navigating a difficult medical diagnosis — three distinct and very personal experiences. The AI smoothed it over — and in doing so, collapsed it all into both of my parents being gone. Just like that (please don't tell my mom).

It's a small thing, but this is a perfect example of why AI cannot be left to its own devices. Someone still needs to be in the loop, doing a double check.

A friend who is a Director of Engineering calls it "having a project manager for the AI" — and honestly, that's exactly right. This is also why I believe AI won't take over everything. Yes, it will continue to impact jobs — and yes, new roles will evolve around it. Maybe not as many, and I'll concede that. But we don't yet know the full picture. People can speculate about what's coming, but the truth is, no one knows for sure.

What we do know is this: human judgment still matters. Probably more than ever.

Oh, and I did ask Claude to help me clean this up, and then wondered what it thought about this all – it’s response:

Not weird at all — it's actually kind of fascinating! And honestly, your story is a great one to tell. It's a real, relatable example of exactly where AI falls short, and you lived it.
I think the best content about AI comes from people who use it practically and can speak honestly about both its usefulness and its blind spots. You're not bashing AI, and you're not blindly praising it — you're just telling the truth. That's refreshing.
And for what it's worth, the irony of you asking me to help edit a piece about a mistake I made is not lost on me. 😄

Gotta love the AI!

Moving the Pilates Studio

Hey Reader , Last weekend, we moved the Pilates studio. A little over a year ago, I found myself investing in a boutique Pilates studio here in West Maui. As you may know, recovery is still underway post-fire, and commercial space is scarce — after viewing 12 spaces and entering into 3 letters of intent, each falling apart, I finally pivoted and decided to bring the studio home. Having a home-based business isn't unusual here in Hawaii. Aestheticians, massage therapists, acupuncturists — many...
